History
Friedenstein was built in 1643 for Ernst I on the site of the destroyed Grimmenstein fortress. The monumental, raw shape was intended to symbolize the reconstruction of the country after the Thirty Years' War.
The palace has preserved historic apartments, art collections and the Ekhof-Theater with original Baroque stage machinery.
Surowa, niemal forteczna bryła miała przekazywać ideę odbudowy po wojnie trzydziestoletniej. Wewnątrz kontrastują z nią bogate apartamenty i zbiory pokazujące ambicje kulturalne książęcego dworu w Gotha.
Największym skarbem jest Ekhof-Theater z zachowaną drewnianą maszynerią sceniczną. Dawny sposób zmiany dekoracji nadaje wizycie dynamikę, jakiej nie oferują zwykłe sale pałacowe. Muzea, park i oranżeria uzasadniają kilkugodzinny pobyt.
